Dietmar Wennemer
Chief Executive Officer at TouchStoneID I had the pleasure of working with Bill for six years at Blackberry. Bill has a strong engineering sense. He has a keen ability to see the mechanical and industrial design requirements and transform challenges of the design into great opportunities. He is a true expert in materials & finish and product design and he has proven this through unique ideas and innovation. Bill understands the processes relating to manufacturing, material development, and finishing methods used across the mobile device industry. He has the business acumen to meet the needs of all cross-functional teams including industrial & mechanical design, manufacturing and quality control. Most importantly, Bill has a great vision for integrating new and old technologies into complex products and bring them to the market. |
Aaron Allen
Principal Mechanical Architect, Harris Corp
The primary objective at the start of any mobile device project is to match the vision of the industrial designer. Many times this requires inventing solutions rather than choosing them; CMF is no exception. New finishes, new device shapes, and the constant requirement to reduce device size have driven Bill over the 15 years I have worked with him to continuously invent in the CMF area. And each time not just attempting to target the industrial design vision, but develop a technique that will meet the durability that is expected by the customer. Bill has developed such things as insert molded woven glass weave enclosures that have helped to meet device thickness requirements enabling volume for larger batteries. Using his relationships established with a vast supplier base, He not only developed techniques for forming and insert molding, but established new vendor relationships to deliver the glass weave material. He also worked to develop the forming of the curved glass used in the PRIV smartphone with suppliers. In addition, Bill has developed techniques for forming textures in leather, improving the durability of paint and branding logos, and worked with suppliers to develop techniques for achieving new looks to place in the industrial designers tool box.

Michael DeFazio
Freelance Industrial Designer
Kind, creative, and meticulous. Bill has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in CMF that empowers designers to make the impossible, possible. Specifically, during the design of the BlackBerry Priv, his knowledge in glass composite technology and metal finishing techniques significantly contributed to making the device a success from a design standpoint

Tim Kyowski
Director Advanced Mechanical Eng Team at BlackBerry
Bill worked for me at BlackBerry as the manager of the CMF team. In this capacity he was responsible for both the Advanced CMF functions, NPI CMF developments and in life CMF support including color variants.
Delivering great CMF at a product level is a very cross functional experience. It requires an understanding of the Industrial Design process, mechanical product design and part manufacturing technics, marketing and cost goals as well as quality and yield expectations.
Bill has a very high level understanding of the product development process and is able to use that knowledge along with his technical abilities to take the right course of action and risk management. He puts in great effort to find solutions and does not want to compromise on industrial design intent. But he also has a good understanding of project timing, process capabilities and time/effort required to dial in process to acceptable limits. Bill is forward looking and will drive new technology and or advance existing technologies in areas that will help deliver Industrial Design, advance mechanical part production methods, and dial in decoration methods to deliver a superior part / device look and feel. He will also take the time to find out if there are areas or opportunities to stay within standard practice goals, when these type of opportunities can be had without impacting the main goals of the product. Bill is a team player and will work to understand the product goals limitation and will work out plans together with all stake holders to insure the product is a successes on all fronts but most importantly in appearance. If you want to insure you are not getting compromised Color Material and Finish on your products and want to insure you can achieve this without compromising cost, yield and project schedules Bill will be able to help you, at any stage of the product/part development (Concept, new process development, design, NPI and quality control).
